Add The New York Times on GoogleAgrega The New York Times en Google Andrew Bailey, a deputy director of the F.B.I., said on Monday that he would leave the job after a little more than a year, the second such departure amid the turbulence in federal law enforcement under the Trump administration.Mr. Bailey said on social media that he was stepping down from his post, part of an unusual three-person leadership arrangement, “to return to my family in Missouri.” He expressed confidence that the F.B.I. under the director, Kash Patel, would continue to fight violent crime, “ensure strong organizational accountability, and restore public trust in this institution of excellence.”Mr. Patel in turn praised Mr. Bailey for making a “fantastic contribution instituting critical reforms” at the F.B.I.In recent months, people familiar with the inner workings of the agency have described a rocky arrangement between Mr. Patel and his two deputy directors, Mr. Bailey and Christopher Raia, a longtime F.B.I. agent and manager.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENTMr. Patel and Mr. Bailey did not get along, and often went long stretches without speaking to each other, according to multiple people familiar with their interactions who spoke on the condition of anonymity. It is unclear whether the White House will pick another second deputy director, or if Mr. Raia will become the only No. 2 in the bureau.Sign up for the On Politics newsletter. It's a pivotal moment for American politics. Join us for 2026 and beyond. Get it sent to your inbox. For decades, the bureau has had a single deputy director, a career F.B.I. official who rose through the ranks of the organization and oversaw daily operations, while reporting to the director, who is appointed by the president. But President Trump upended that tradition last year by naming the right-wing podcaster Dan Bongino, who had little experience in law enforcement beyond serving as a Secret Service agent, as the No. 2 to Mr. Patel. In essence, that put two firebrand influencers with scant management experience atop the 35,000-person agency.Mr. Patel and Mr. Bongino had a sometimes strained relationship with Mr. Trump’s first attorney general, Pam Bondi, whom they blamed for mishandling the release of files related to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. She in turn complained about Mr. Patel’s management of the bureau, including his propensity to post premature or inaccurate information about continuing operations. In August 2025, the Trump administration announced a novel arrangement, saying that Mr. Bailey would join Mr. Bongino as a co-deputy director. At the time, Mr. Bailey was serving as the attorney general in Missouri, a post he had used to pursue lawsuits related to conservative culture-war issues.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENTMany agents inside the bureau believed that Ms. Bondi, herself a former Republican state attorney general, had brought in someone to serve as director in waiting if Mr. Trump ever tired of Mr. Patel. But Mr. Trump fired Ms. Bondi in April, and Mr. Patel outlasted Mr. Bailey. In the interim, Mr. Bongino quit, and Mr. Patel selected Mr. Raia to replace him, keeping the three-person leadership arrangement rather than having Mr. Bailey become the sole No. 2. Mr. Patel more broadly appeared to sideline Mr. Bailey, who has left little imprint from his year at the bureau.Mr. Bailey showed up in Atlanta in January, when the F.B.I. executed a warrant to seize 2020 ballots from Fulton County, Ga. His appearance was notable not just because of the effort to use the bureau to press Mr. Trump’s baseless claims of a rigged election, but also because it was extraordinarily rare for Mr. Bailey to play a visible role in any operation.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENT",
