Searching the Rubble After Afghanistanβs Deadly Earthquake By The New York Times Sept. 1, 2025 After a 6.0 magnitude earthquake devastated villages in four provinces in eastern Afghanistan overnight, rescue workers on Monday combed the rubble for the dead and the missing and evacuated the injured to regional hospitals. The mountainous regionβs steep terrain, and landslides in the area, made roads treacherous and access difficult, delaying some rescue efforts. One village, Mazar Dara, was completely blocked and could only be reached by helicopter. The epicenter was near Jalalabad, a city of about 200,000 people that is less than 100 miles from Kabul, the capital. Residents of Kabul felt the aftershocks, but no major damage was reported there. Hundreds of people were killed and at least 2,500 others were injured in a difficult to reach mountainous region. Officials warned many more people may still be awaiting rescue.
