Aug. 28, 2025 Portland’s reputation for weirdness is warranted: Its annual can’t-miss event is a naked bike ride, and local artists turned a dead mall’s D.M.V. office into a creative co-working space. But there's depth to Portland beyond its quirks. Its dining scene is one of the country’s finest, and next year, offerings expand when the James Beard Public Market opens across 38,000 square feet downtown, championing Oregon food vendors. Its diverse music scene has birthed talents ranging from Everclear to the Decemberists to Aminé, and you can climb a volcano without leaving city limits. Summer is known to be Portland’s loveliest season — especially in September, when it’s still sunny but the crowds have thinned out. RecommendationsKey stops Mount Tabor Park’s trails scale an extinct cinder cone volcano and meander alongside three reservoirs that once supplied the city with drinking water. In a city besotted with farmers’ markets, the Saturday PSU Farmers Market is the biggest, and the only one that operates year-round.The many color-coded rooms in Powell’s City of Books — including a rare book room filled with signed copies and first editions — hold more than half a million volumes total.A pass to Cascada Thermal Springs & Spa, part of a new wellness-themed hotel, includes three hours of soaking in a silent subterranean oasis. Outdoor activities Forest Park’s 5,200 acres make it among the largest urban forests in the nation, and a great place to give hiking a try without having to spend hours in the car.The Witch’s Castle (officially the Macleay Park Shelter or Stone House) was originally constructed as a picnic shelter and restroom, but today it’s a popular hiking and photography destination.A lush one-acre forest garden of ferns and Oregon grape in Alberta Park is Portland’s first designated nature patch, part of an initiative to create natural environments in urban areas for people and wildlife alike. Restaurants and bars Division Wines, which started as a bottle shop and eventually expanded to include a bar, serves half glasses, flights and wines of the day — accompanied by nibbles sourced from Portland purveyors. The pie shop Lauretta Jean’s is named for the proprietor Kate McMillen’s grandmother, who passed down the baking techniques that make its menu shine. The Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod houses over 20 of the city’s 500-plus food carts, and offers benches and a full bar for those who want to linger. The elevated Haitian cuisine at Kann earned the chef Gregory Gourdet two of his three James Beard Foundation awards, including Best New Restaurant and Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific Region. It might not always appear on the menu, but TwentySix Cafe’s hazelnut latte is a local favorite — made with Oregon hazelnuts, of course.Bernstein’s Bagels makes its hand-rolled, slow-rise bagels daily in house, and on weekends, there’s pumpernickel. The restaurant Verde Cocina, which has three storefronts and a farmers’ market presence, has a grammatically incorrect name in Spanish on purpose: With its focus on fresh Pacific Northwest ingredients, its owners wanted the word for “green” to come first.Orange & Blossom is a 100 percent plant-based patisserie, but its goods are soft and buttery enough to fool any omnivore.Salt & Straw’s ice cream has come a long way since its food-cart beginnings, with three Portland scoop shops and satellites as far away as Miami.Baerlic Brewing stands out from Portland’s many (many) breweries for its friendly taprooms, inventive menu and long list of awards.Feral, a brick-and-mortar restaurant that started as a popular pop-up, has a completely vegan menu that can change on a daily basis, and many ingredients are locally foraged. The food cart Dawnbringer’s main dish may look like just another breakfast sandwich, but its cornerstone is a house-made English muffin with a special recipe.Carioca Bowls serves classic açaí bowls (including the option to build your own) as well as Brazilian cheese bread, smoothies and avocado toast. Live music and nightlife A night at Mississippi Studios can feel like church for music lovers — not least because the space once was one.Revered among Portland musicians (and listeners eager to discover emerging local talent), Turn! Turn! Turn! also hosts community events like karaoke and a drawing club. The Goodfoot, an eclectic haunt that hosts live music, stand-up comedy and some of the best dance events in the city, will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year. Shopping and galleries Really Good Stuff is an eminently browsable boutique. Save time to search through vintage clothes, musical instruments and even arcade consoles.Tender Loving Empire started as a record label based in the founders’ apartment, and today features several storefronts filled with locally made housewares, apparel, accessories and more. The artist-owned Blind Insect Gallery’s walls are often hung with work from artists as far-flung as Oaxaca, Mexico, though you’ll find plenty of nearby talent, too.Nucleus Portland is part gallery, part gift shop whose offerings include Kewpie dolls and vintage Japanese key chains. The front rooms at Guardino Gallery exhibit the works of two Pacific Northwest contemporary artists each month. Where to stay Just opened last December, Cascada offers prebiotic sodas and housemade plant milks (cashew, almond, pepita and hemp) in its on-site cafe. Hotel guests can opt for upgrades to enjoy daily fitness classes like heated yoga, mat Pilates and sound healing (otherwise $35 to $45 per session) and unlimited spa access ($100 day pass). All rooms (starting at around $300 per night) are outfitted with full kitchenettes, induction cooking surfaces, and a washer and dryer.Northwest Portland Hostel puts you within walking distance of many downtown attractions. Depending on the season, rooms with en suite bathrooms start at just over $100, while single rooms with a shared bath start at $55.Because of its lax restrictions on accessory dwelling units, Portland has long been a hub for tiny-house enthusiasts. Guests can try out the lifestyle at the Tiny Digs Hotel. Rates are seasonal, but start around $180 per night, and footprints range from 128 to 280 square feet. Some of the homes can sleep up to four adults. (Just make sure you really like one another.)Portland is also awash in short-term rentals, many of which are as quirky as you might imagine — think converted double-decker buses and backyard yurts. But if you want something homey and private, you can find that, too: Portland’s many A.D.U.s, such as converted garages and daylight basements with separate entrances, also make excellent short-term rentals. Find them in neighborhoods like Boise, King and Hawthorne, close to major pedestrian areas. Getting around If you’ll mostly explore the series of walkable neighborhoods that make up the city, you might rely on TriMet’s transit network, including the zero-emissions Portland Streetcar. If you want to commute like a local, the Biketown bike-share program makes it easy to do so. (That it’s the nation’s first all-electric bike-share fleet helps you power up Portland’s hills; $1 to unlock then 35 cents per minute.) Still, for convenience and flexibility (or for travelers hoping to enjoy outdoor adventures further afield — which is, after all, what the Pacific Northwest is best known for), the best way to get around is by rental car. ItineraryFriday Mount Tabor Park 3 p.m. Summit an extinct volcano From the airport (as you exit, look up at the undulating nine-acre timber ceiling finished last year), it’s a 15-minute drive south to Mount Tabor Park, where you can stretch your legs like a local. A series of meandering trails will wind you slowly up and around this extinct cinder cone volcano, but you can also climb directly to the summit up the flight of 293 stairs that start where SE Yamhill Street meets SE 69th Avenue. Those piles of pine cones along the steps? Runners marking their laps. Mount Tabor Park Division Wines 4:30 p.m. Thrift and sip In the hip Richmond neighborhood — a five-minute drive from Mount Tabor — you might spot a unicyclist in formal attire or a potbellied pig on a leash. Also impressive: the thrifting. Really Good Stuff is an overflowing maze of antique musical instruments, vinyl records, Instant Relatives (candid, three-by-five snaps of strangers, sourced mostly from estate sales) and more. The feline face on the shop’s sign memorializes the late store cat, Tommy. For refreshments, cross the street toward Division Wines, whose rotating menu includes several wine-of-the-day wild cards — and half-glass pours of anything on the menu for half the full-glass price ($12 to $14). If you’d rather have a sweet than a sip, a slice of salted honey pie ($7) from Lauretta Jean’s, a block away, will make you understand why there’s a line. Division Wines Kann 7:30 p.m. Enjoy award-winning Haitian cuisine More than 20 of the city’s 500 or so food carts (yes, we call them “carts,” not “trucks”) gather at the Hawthorne Asylum, a lot in the Buckman neighborhood. Mix and match to your taste, from Ukrainian dumplings to waffle sandwiches. For upscale Buckman dining, walk 20 minutes north to Kann for James Beard Award-winning, elevated Haitian cuisine. Everything is dairy- and gluten-free, and there’s an optional vegan menu. If you’re a meat eater, try the griyo twice-cooked pork ($24), which is fall-apart tender. Considered by many to be Haiti’s national dish, it’s served in the traditional style alongside smashed fried plantains, avocado and pikliz (spicy pickled cabbage slaw). While mains like the pan-seared striped bass ($60) come at higher price points, they’re big enough to share. Reserve well in advance. Kann The Goodfoot 10 p.m. Get on the Goodfoot Another Buckman institution, the Goodfoot is home to Soul Stew, one of the longest-running dance parties in town ($10 cover). Most Fridays, Eric Hedford, otherwise known as Aquaman, and fellow groove masters expertly spin vinyl 45s, from 1960s funk classics to deeper disco cuts, for a sweaty, multigenerational crowd in its dark-but-friendly basement. The Goodfoot The Witch’s Castle is a quick and kid-friendly walk within Forest Park, which has 80-plus miles of trails. Saturday 8:30 a.m. Rise, shine and sweat At the Eliot neighborhood’s TwentySix Cafe, ask for a hazelnut latte (from $5.50), made with a house-made nut paste instead of syrup. (Oregon produces nearly all the hazelnuts grown in the United States.) A mile east at Bernstein’s Bagels, pumpernickel (available only on weekends) is delicious as the bookends of a trout salad sandwich ($11). With carbs on board, it’s a short drive west to Forest Park and its 80-plus miles of trails, perfect for visitors short on time who still want a taste of the Pacific Northwest’s favorite hobby. Starting from the Lower Macleay Park entrance on NW Upshur Street, it’s less than a mile to what’s known as the Witch’s Castle, which served as a ranger station and restroom before suffering extensive storm damage and being abandoned to the moss in the 1960s — a quick and kid-friendly excursion. Powell’s City of Books 11 a.m. Enjoy Northwest’s best Get a post-hike ice cream cone at Salt & Straw on NW 23rd Avenue, the major pedestrian thoroughfare of Northwest Portland’s Nob Hill neighborhood. Creative flavors change monthly (in September, apple and cheddar cinnamon rolls returns by popular demand; waffle cone, $7.90). Then it's time to shop (and enjoy Oregon’s absence of general sales tax). Visit Tender Loving Empire, a record label and artists’ market with the brand’s vinyls as well as housewares, apparel and stationery. They have an airport kiosk, too. Finally, grab a bike from one of the two bike-share docks on NW 23rd Avenue (at NW Overton Street or NW Kearney Street) for a five-minute trip to Powell’s City of Books, whose four-story building occupies an entire city block, earning its self-proclaimed title as the world’s largest independent bookstore. Powell’s City of Books 12:30 p.m. Meander (and munch) the market The PSU Farmers Market, which takes place Saturdays on Portland State University’s green, is both the city’s largest and the only one that runs year-round. Depending on the season, it hosts as many as 100 vendors selling produce, fresh-cut flowers and prepared foods. At Verde Cocina’s tent, everything is gluten-free, and vegetarian options like tofu mole ($17) are satisfying and tasty. Craving a sweeter treat? Orange & Blossom’s baked goods ($5 to $10) are all vegan, and their flours are sourced exclusively from Pacific Northwest mills. Many menu items are seasonal — think peach pistachio tarts in late summer or poached apple bostock (twice-baked brioche) with apple butter at the approach of fall. Artworks by Tena Navarrete on display at Guardino Gallery. 3 p.m. Amble through the arts district The Alberta Arts District — with its rainbow-painted sidewalks and abundant murals — offers an excellent east-side counterpoint to Nob Hill. Within a two-block span, you can visit Blind Insect Gallery, which has a multicultural focus and sometimes displays as many as 80 different artists in its postage-stamp footprint; Nucleus Portland, whose pop-culture-forward sensibilities include anime-inspired art; and Guardino Gallery, where the artists featured in its front rooms are almost always based less than 100 miles away. As you meander east along NE Alberta Street, you’ll find plenty of afternoon pick-me-ups. Baerlic Brewing, a cozy tap house and beer garden, offers, alongside its standards, seasonal beers and one-off experiments, like late summer’s Just Beach Mexican-style lager, brewed with lime zest and sea salt. Taking it easy? Four-ounce pours start at $2.75. Artworks by Tena Navarrete on display at Guardino Gallery. 6:30 p.m. Enjoy the wilderness Join the recreating locals in Alberta Park, just north of Baerlic. (Some Saturdays, you might even spot LARPers — participants in a live-action role play — battling it out with foam swords.) After traipsing along the gravel path through its nature patch, an acre of land rewilded with native plants under dozens of towering Douglas firs, leave the park and stroll west along NE Killingsworth Street to wind up at Feral, whose all-vegan menu can change daily and regularly incorporates foraged Oregon ingredients like huckleberries and chanterelle mushrooms. Expect inventive dishes like lion’s mane mushroom steak slathered in a charred-eggplant Diane sauce ($28) or grilled peaches served with savory spiced cream, hazelnut salsa macha (a spicy condiment), mint and basil ($14). Reservations never hurt, but walk-ins are welcome. Turn! Turn! Turn! 8 p.m. Groove like a local Northeast Portland has (at least) two extraordinary options for live music. Follow NE Killingsworth Street a mile farther west from Feral and you’ll land at Turn! Turn! Turn!, a beloved, down-home space where much local talent has cut its teeth. Saturday-night shows often include four or five bands you’ll almost surely not have heard of before — but will now make you sound like a true Portlander at parties. (Door cover, $5 to $15.) For a show you might be able to sing along to, Mississippi Studios, an intimate space in a former Baptist church, is a 10-minute drive away. The best spot is the balcony, where seats fill up fast. Past acts have included the likes of Ben Kweller, Illuminati Hotties, Iron & Wine and Jenny Owen Youngs. Ticket prices usually hover around $25. Turn! Turn! Turn! Mix and match a meal at the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod in the Buckman neighborhood. Sunday Cascada Thermal Springs & Spa 10:30 a.m. Soak it in For breakfast, go hearty at the food cart Dawnbringer, whose English muffin sandwich ($11) shines thanks to slow-caramelized grains, or light at Carioca Bowls with a fruit-filled açaí bowl starting at $12. Either is the perfect pregame for a soak at Cascada Thermal Springs & Spa, a brand-new wellness-themed hotel a 20-minute drive from the airport. Its silent, phone-free underground baths are a remedy for the busy-ness of travel. Explore the saunas and pools before braving the cold plunge or exfoliating with crushed ice. The $100 pass offers three hours of spa access, including the social upstairs pool: plenty of time to let everything soak in before you take off. Cascada Thermal Springs & Spa",
