By Marc Elias · Democracy Docket founder

I questioned the government chatbot about Trump’s attacks on voting. Here’s what it said.

Donald Trump has launched an AI chatbot. Under the guidance of the U.S. General Services Administration, the new “super intelligence” — as Trump prefers to call it — is taking questions on everything from booking campsites at national parks to getting a new Social Security card.

“Hello, America,” the website welcomes you. “Whatever you need from government, start here.”

I have a few questions for Trump’s federal government — so I decided to play along.

Yesterday afternoon, I made my way over to America.gov and spent some time prompting the AI chatbot about Trump’s attacks on elections and democracy.

The AI surprised me by being more truthful than any actual person working for Trump.

Here are just a few of the questions I asked — and how the chatbot answered.

Who won the 2020 election?

The question that no Trump nominee is allowed to answer honestly — yet the government’s AI chatbot is able to speak the truth. When I asked America.gov who won the election, the answer was simple and straightforward: Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

He wasn’t just “certified as the president,” as Trump nominees are trained to say. Joe Biden won — plain and simple.

This is not a hard or complicated question, and that is why the AI chatbot did not give me a complicated answer. It’s only a matter of time before Trump realizes that America.gov isn’t following his orders. We will see if he is able to rewrite the truth.

Are armed federal agents permitted to be at polling places?

Trump’s chatbot knows the law better than the president. When I asked this question, America.gov responded that “federal law generally bars keeping troops or armed men at a place where a general or special election is being held.” The chatbot correctly states that penalties can include a fine or imprisonment.

If Trump’s chatbot knows that sending troops to the polls is against the law, why doesn’t Trump?

The Democratic Party is currently suing the Trump administration over its threats to send armed troops to the polls — a lawsuit my law firm filed. To the chatbot, this is a straightforward issue. I believe a judge will see it that way, too.

If America.gov doesn’t stand by Trump’s claims that he can send agents to the polls, who will?

Is there evidence of widespread voter fraud in the U.S. elections?

Donald Trump and his followers cite widespread voter fraud as their excuse for eroding voting rights.

From noncitizen voting to flawed election machines, the conspiracies are endless and rampant — and they fuel Trump to break the law. For example, when Trump’s anti-mail voting executive order demanded that the United States Postal Service only send absentee ballots to voters on official state lists, it was under the guise that mail voting made our elections less secure.

This is not true — and America.gov agrees. When I asked about fraud in our elections, the AI chatbot said, “Official sources document individual election-crime cases. They do not document fraud at a scale that changed a national election result.”

Election fraud is exceedingly rare. When it does happen, it is often a simple mistake by the voter — not someone with nefarious intentions to change the election results. And it certainly doesn’t happen enough to change the outcome.

Trump’s AI chatbot lives in reality. Trump lives in conspiracies.

Does the president have authority over the conduct of federal elections?

Donald Trump wants to claim that he has the power to run our federal elections. He does not — and his AI knows it. While Trump is trying to overreach his authority to control voting and counting ballots, when I asked America.gov who had the authority over our elections, the answer was clear: “The Constitution does not give the president the power to set the rules for federal elections.” That job belongs to the states. The president’s only role is to enforce the existing law.

And when it comes to counting ballots, the states are not the agents of the federal government. The states have authority over their elections.

Trump will try to rewrite the law. He will try to convince you that the law says something it does not. He will ignore the law to assert authorities and powers he does not have. And when he does that, ask the chatbot run by his own government. As of right now, it will tell you the truth the president doesn’t want you to know.

We’re grateful for your support at the highest level.
