See which 50 products — out of the tens of thousands we’ve ever recommended — made the winners list.“It’s going to run forever.” That’s how Wirecutter writer Tim Heffernan — perhaps American journalism’s foremost expert on air-cleaning devices — describes the durability of the Coway Airmega Mighty, which has reigned atop our guide to air purifiers for 12 years. Over the past decade, Tim has rigorously tested more than 70 air purifiers. But none have been pushed as far beyond their on-paper limits as Tim has pushed the Airmega Mighty. He once turned one on and let it go nonstop for two years without ever changing the filter. It worked as impressively and efficiently on day 730 as it did on day 1. (Coway does recommend replacing the filter at least every 12 months, though.) “It’s like a well-made car,” Tim says. “Like a Subaru. You’re not going to be like, ‘Ooh, that’s a sexy car,’ but it will run for a quarter of a million miles and never give you any trouble.”But when Tim says “it’s going to run forever,” he isn’t just talking about the device’s durability. His prediction could also potentially apply to the Mighty’s sway among Wirecutter’s top air purifier picks — or to its yearly ranking as the most popular product for Wirecutter’s readers across all categories, period. That’s why the Coway Airmega Mighty, along with the upgraded Coway Airmega Mighty2, which became our new top pick earlier this year, have earned spots in Wirecutter’s Hall of Fame.Runner-upRunner-up, A legend for a reason Coway Airmega Mighty (AP-1512HH)Coway Airmega Mighty (AP-1512HH)Perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, and living rooms, this air purifier is one of the highest-performing, most durable, and most economical models we’ve ever tested.Buying options: DEAL, original price $190, sale price $155 from Amazon, opens in a new tabYou save $35 (18%)$230 from Walmart, opens in a new tab(white)$230 from Walmart, opens in a new tab(black)$240 from Wirecutter Store, opens in a new tabFree ShippingTop pickTop pick, Exceptional, efficient, easy to live with Coway Airmega Mighty2 (AP-1512N)Coway Airmega Mighty2 (AP-1512N)The Coway Airmega Mighty2 is our first new top pick in a decade, as it outperforms its predecessor. It’s more energy-efficient, quieter, and easier to maintain. And it’s nicer-looking, too.Buying options: DEAL, original price $270, sale price $190 from Coway, opens in a new tabPrice reflected in cart$270 from Amazon, opens in a new tab$270 from Wirecutter Store, opens in a new tabFree ShippingWhy is the Coway Airmega Mighty so impressive and popular? In short, it’s “an appliance that over-performs its specs,” says Tim. “It’s iconic.”And yet, for all of the extraordinary praise we’ve heaped upon this device, what makes the Airmega Mighty a perennial GOAT pick is actually just how mundane and pragmatic it is, especially in a category that’s so crucially important to health and safety.Over the past few years, awareness of and concern about air quality has skyrocketed, with the pandemic and the scourge of smoke-spewing wildfires largely to blame. Millions of Americans are thinking more and more about the purity, or lack thereof, of the air they breathe into their lungs. And as Tim writes, “a well-designed purifier can capture virtually all airborne allergens, bacteria, viruses, and smoke, and do it quietly and efficiently, around the clock, for years on end.”What’s incredible is that an air purifier is just a fan with a filter (or technically, multiple filters working in tandem). As the fan sucks air into the purifier’s housing, the filters capture whatever dander, dust, spores, smoke, odors, pollen, or other particulates that happen to be floating around. When operating correctly, that setup should remove more than 99% of those particles from the air.In our years of testing, the Airmega Mighty has repeatedly hit that near-perfect benchmark no matter what Tim has thrown at it.

Lisa Fischer and Wendy Li/NYT WirecutterMuch like the machine itself, our standard test is simple and straightforward: In our Long Island City, New York, office, Tim commandeers a room that measures 135 square feet, a fraction of the coverage area that the Airmega Mighty is capable of. He closes the door and uses a handheld particle counter to measure the air’s particulate matter as a baseline. Then he lights five wooden kitchen matches and lets them burn; after waiting three minutes to allow the smoke to spread throughout the room, he flips on the air purifier. Thirty minutes later, he measures how much the particulate matter in the air has been reduced compared with his initial reading.Though that straightforward test initially stemmed from financial necessity — “back when we were a scrappy little company with no money,” as Tim says — he has stuck with it because it tells him everything he needs to know about an air purifier’s performance. “Smoke is the hardest [particle] to capture because it’s the finest, so that’s why I do that test,” he says. For a filter to qualify as true HEPA, “you’ve got to capture 99.97% of this very fine particle size in one go,” he notes. “That’s an extremely high standard.”It’s still not the biggest challenge he has put the Airmega Mighty up against, however. After California’s monster wildfire season of 2017, Tim took an Airmega Mighty to Wirecutter’s Los Angeles office. To re-create the wildfire conditions, he burned a bunch of footlong incense sticks in a room much larger than the air purifier’s intended coverage area and powered up the machine as they continued to burn so that it was dealing with ongoing smoke, rather than a fixed amount. The result: In 50 minutes, the Airmega Mighty reduced the presence of smoke particulates by 70% in a room more than twice the size of its recommended scope. This performance, Tim observed at the time, equaled that of some much more powerful competitors. But that alone isn’t the reason it has ruled as our top-pick air purifier for so long. “Lots of air purifiers work well. Many of them are not easy to live with,” Tim says. “The livability factors are much more important.” As he’s written, those factors include “quiet operation, displays that can shut off, simple controls, compact size, and decent looks.” Implementing such features might sound like the easy part of designing and manufacturing an air purifier. Tim’s testing — and the Airmega Mighty’s dominance of the field during his years of evaluating air purifiers — proves that it’s not.Other purifiers he’s tested have grown louder as they’ve grown older. The Airmega Mighty has stayed consistently quiet, hitting a decibel level comparable to that of a quiet office or a moderate rainfall at its loudest. Other models have lights on their display panels that don’t shut off, which can be especially annoying to light sleepers. The Airmega Mighty lets you keep its lights completely turned off while the machine is in use.Other purifiers are often shaped like tall cylinders, which makes them more visually obtrusive. The Airmega Mighty is stout and square, blending into its surroundings without distracting the eye. “Nothing is perfect,” Tim says, “but the Airmega Mighty is almost perfectly designed for its job.”To get any closer to perfection, you’d have to, well, develop the next iteration of the Airmega Mighty, the Airmega Mighty2.Introduced by Coway earlier this year, the Airmega Mighty2 unseated the OG Airmega Mighty, which is now our runner-up pick, in the latest iteration of our guide. It’s sleeker-looking than its predecessor, with sharper lines and a matte finish. Its noise output is also subtler (Tim compares it to the steady hum you hear inside a hushed airplane cabin), and at its highest speed setting, the Airmega Mighty2 is considerably more energy-efficient than the original. What they have in common is their motor, which is still, in Tim’s estimation, the hero of any purifier.“In my mind, they’re iterations of the same thing,” Tim says of the two Airmega Mighty variants. “This new one will probably be our pick for another 10 years. It’s going to be really, really hard to knock it off.”We’ll see you in 2036, Coway. This article was edited by Maxine Builder and Ben Frumin.Get today’s recommendationExpert advice.
