SCOTT HELLERHow do you organize your books?By subject matter. I like knowing where to go when I’m looking for something specific. I’ve always looked at books as resources, not decoration. So the shelves have to make sense to me.What book might people be surprised to find on your shelves? Most people probably don’t know that I’m a gardener or how much I genuinely enjoy it, so they might be surprised by how many gardening books I have. There’s something about growing things that teaches you patience. You have to understand what something needs, give it the right environment and then let it become what it’s supposed to become. I think there’s a lesson in that.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENT“Reading wasn’t a hobby. It was my first hustle,” you write. Explain. As a kid, there were a lot of things I didn’t have access to, but I had access to books. So if there was something I wanted to understand, I could go find a book about it. History, religion, business, science, people, how things worked. I could teach myself. That’s why I call it my first hustle. A hustle is figuring out how to use what you have to get what you need. What I had was the ability to read, the curiosity to keep going and enough sense to understand that knowing something other people didn’t know could be an advantage.Which childhood books and authors still stick with you?“The Swiss Family Robinson” changed my life. There was something about the adventure of it, the ingenuity, this family having to figure out how to survive and create a whole world with what they had. As a kid, that stayed with me. “The Diary of Anne Frank” was another one. I was young, but I understood that I was reading the words of somebody who had actually lived this. That made it different. And then there was Stephen King. At some point I had to admit: I respect how good you are, Mr. King, but I also enjoy sleeping.Your “Club Shay Shay” interview has been viewed more than 88 million times. The audience for a book is tiny by comparison. Why bother writing one?If you’ve read seven or eight hundred autobiographies of other people, you just assume that at some point you have to add your name to that conversation. And as incredible as a hundred million views may be, that piece of work still belongs to the internet. We haven’t had the internet for thousands of years. Books, we have. There’s something different about putting your story in a form that can sit on a shelf, get passed from one person to another and still be there long after whatever platform is popular today is gone.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENTHow in the world did you make an enemy of Dr. Seuss?By going around calling myself Katt in the Hat and making money doing it. Apparently, that will get you a cease-and-desist. At the time, I was just a young comedian trying to build a name for myself. I wasn’t thinking about trademarks or intellectual property. I was thinking, “Katt in the Hat — that’s funny.” They were thinking something entirely different.Have you ever gotten in trouble for reading a book? No, because I was allowed to read pretty much anything I wanted. There was even a period in my life when all I wanted was to find the list of forbidden books so I could read every one of them. Because if you tell me a book is forbidden, now I need to know why. What’s in here? What kind of information could be so volatile that somebody decided I shouldn’t have access to it?That’s the great thing about books. They give you the freedom to find things out for yourself. And out of the thousands of books I’ve read, I don’t think I’ve read four bad books in my whole life. You’re going to get something out of a book. What’s the most interesting thing you learned from a book recently? The Torah: Everything. You’re organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite?J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain and Jack London. Tolkien because I’d want to understand how somebody builds an entire world in their mind with that much detail and then convinces everybody else that it exists. Mark Twain because he understood how to use humor to tell the truth about people and society. Lastly, Jack London because there was something fearless about both his writing and the life he lived. Put them at the same table and I’m not even sure I’d say that much. I’d just want to see what they argue about.AdvertisementSKIP ADVERTISEMENT",
